Designing Inclusive Movement & Dance Classes for All Bodies
An inclusive movement class welcomes diverse bodies, ages, abilities, and backgrounds. Rather than one-size-fits-all routines, it offers options, modifications, and encouragement. At ExerciseMoveDance.org, we promote practices that make movement accessible and empowering for everyone.
Offer Options & Modifications
Every participant is different. Instructors should present alternatives — seated versions, lower impact, slower tempo — while honoring each person’s capacity and pacing.
Use Clear Cues & Demonstrations
Explain movements verbally and visually. Demonstrate variations slowly, offer spatial orientation cues, and encourage participants to adapt as needed.
Create a Supportive Atmosphere
Language matters. Use inclusive language (e.g. “move in a way that feels good for your body”) and avoid prescriptive commands that exclude those with limited mobility.
Integrate Sensory & Musical Sensitivity
Select music and movement pacing that respects auditory and sensory sensitivities. Lower volume, clear rhythm, and predictable structure help more participants feel comfortable and included.
